The Des Plaines River Trail follows its historic namesake river through multiple forest preserves. The Des Plaines River Trail travels south from Camp Ground Road Woods through Jerome Huppert Woods, Fullerton Woods, along the western edge of the Indian Boundary Golf Course, Schiller Woods, Robinson Woods, Catherine Chevalier Woods, Dam No. 4 Woods East, Algonquin Woods, and ends at Sunset Bridge Meadow.

The trail passes through forest, prairie, and picnic areas with views of the river throughout.

Year-round, conditions permitting.

Trail closures

All horses must wear a horse tag affixed to the left-hand side of the bridle or the saddle and be clearly visible when on Forest Preserves trails. Day pass $5.

Distance and Terrain

11.0 miles

Part of Des Plaines River Trail System but trail ends at a paved, privately owned section of trail just south of Algonquin Rd. on the northern edge of Camp Ground Road Woods. Unpaved northern portion of Des Plaines River Trail begins again at Kloempken Prairie but there is no horse trailer parking available. The northern section of Des Plaines River Trail is best reached from Dam No. 1 Woods - East where there is trailer parking and more than 35 miles of uninterrupted trail. The 11 miles of the Des Plaines River Trail from Sunset Bridge Meadow to Camp Ground Road Woods is local ride in-access only.

Annual pass $35 for Cook County residents and $50 for non-residents.

31.4 miles pf the Des Plaines River Trail are managed by Lake County Forest Preserves and 22 miles by Cook County Forest Preserves.
